Rev. Elizabeth Steele is the Interim Pastor of Whittier Presbyterian Church in Whittier, California. The Reverend Dr. Elizabeth Steele was ordained by the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1980. Her first position was as the interim pastor of a congregation who’s previous pastor had renounced the denomination’s authority while under investigation for both financial and sexual misconduct. Working with congregations that have experienced traumatic events or are undergoing difficult transitions has been an unintentional theme in her ministry. This has not only included pastoral misconduct, but mandated building retrofitting, demographically changing communities, and coping with the cultural shifts affecting many congregations. She has also worked in a variety of multiethnic and multicultural settings. These include an African-American congregation, a bilingual congregation consisting of separate Spanish and English services, and a Welsh congregation that was also bilingual. She has preached in several Asian congregations with the aid of an interpreter. In addition to working in her own denomination, she has served congregations in the Southwest California Synod of the ELCA and the Southern California Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ. Her masters and doctoral degrees are from the University of Chicago Divinity School.
In addition to her work as an interim pastor, Elizabeth is a member of APIMS (The Association of Presbyterian Interim Ministry Specialists ) and served on their board. She holds Professional Transition Specialist status through IMN (Interim Ministry Network). She is also trained as a New Beginnings facilitator.
